Meal planning is a great way for families to save money on groceries every month. Meal planning is also a great way to save time on food preparation.

With cut backs and layoffs many people are looking for ways to bring in more money just to make ends meet. And while this may sound like a good plan it isn't always possible. Luckily there are things that can be done to cut back on one of the biggest household expenses – groceries. In fact, with a little creativity and organization many savvy consumers are finding ways to save money on groceries through meal planning

Save Money on Groceries by Shopping Around the Sales

Shopping for groceries around the sales may sound like a common sense idea but without a plan it is easier said than done. For example, stocking up on big packs of ground beef or chicken, separating into family size portions and freezing is a great way to save money on groceries. However, other ingredients are also needed to round out the meals. Be sure to take inventory of what staples are on hand so that meals can be planned accordingly.

Save Money on Groceries Through Meal Planning

After taking note of what is on hand and what is on sale it is important to start meal planning. Meal planning can be for the week, bi-weekly or monthly depending on shopping habits. The trick is to plan meals around similar ingredients.

For example, if boneless skinless chicken breasts and potatoes on sale this week one meal could include baked chicken with mashed potatoes while breaded chicken, homemade oven fries and could be served a few days later. Just round out the meals with whatever vegetables are on sale. Since chicken can be frozen it makes sense to buy enough to last several weeks, or at least until it goes on sale again.

Save Money on Groceries by Stocking up on Every Shopping Trip

At first it may be a bit difficult to plan creative meals each week and it may even be hard shop within the alotted food budget. However, after a few weeks of stocking up around sale items it is easy to keep the pantry and freezer full at all times, which makes meal planning much easier. In fact, many families that practice meal planning soon find themselves planning meals months in advance.

Save Time With Meal Planning

Meal planning not only saves money but time as well. For example, when making food that freezes well such as lasagna, homemade sauces and soups it makes sense to double or even triple the batch. Freeze in family size portions and a quick dinner can be on the table on busy weeknights.

Another time saver is to do partial prep work for future meals. For example, cooking a few extra chicken breasts for chicken salad the next day or freezing precooked chicken or ground beef will save time on future meal prep.

Shopping With Coupons

Many savvy shoppers use coupons on every trip but to maximize savings it is important to use manufacturers coupons on items that are on sale. In fact, shopping this way often means paying just pennies for the item or even getting the item free! Be aware that coupons may not always offer better savings. In fact, often generic products are still the better buy.

Meal planning takes a bit of practice but the results are well worth it; and saving money on groceries each month makes it much easier to make ends meet each and every month.
