Some of the best memories that children have growing up is making simple art projects at school or at home. In fact, simple art projects can be turned into beautiful crafts using inexpensive items from the the craft store, dollar store and even from recycled objects found at home.

This snake themed pencil holder and topper is a quick and simple pipe cleaner and felt craft that takes very little time to put together, with just a few inexpensive items including a clean soup can, pipe cleaners and scraps of felt.

Items Needed to Create a Snake Themed Pencil Topper and Holder

Parents will need to supply the following items to begin the craft.

  • Pipe Cleaners (assorted colors)
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Child Safe White glue such as Elmer's
  • Red felt
  • Green felt
  • Additional felt (assorted colors, optional)
  • Clean, empty soup can
  • Scissors
  • Pencils

Pencil Topper

  1. Form a loop approximately one inch wide at the top of a pipe cleaner to form the snake's head. Twist the end of the pipe cleaner to secure around neck of the snake.
  2. Create a small snake tongue using scraps of red felt. Glue to the end of the loop and allow to dry for about five minutes.
  3. Turn the snake over and glue one wiggly eye on each side of the head. Allow to dry for about five more minutes.
  4. When glue is dry, place the straight part of the pipe cleaner that is closest to the head against a pencil and coil around the pencil. Once completely coiled push up toward the top of the pencil so that the head and part of the snake is hanging over the top. Bend the head to create the desired look.

For a different look, twist two different color pipe cleaners together to make a more colorful snake.

Pencil Holder

  1. Wrap a large piece of green felt around the soup can. With a pencil, loosely mark the top of the felt and the side and cut felt to fit the diameter of the can.
  2. If desired, the child can create a jungle theme including trees, leaves, insects, frogs and other wildlife out of scraps of felt and wiggly eyes. Glue to the green felt and allow to dry.
  3. Once the glue has dried, glue the piece of green felt to the can. Alternately, the felt craft pieces can be attached after the green felt has been glued to the can.

When using tin cans, be sure they are cleaned out thoroughly and that the lid is removed with a safe-edge can opener so that there are no sharp edges. For the snake, be sure to bend over any sharp edges on the pipe cleaners. Kids will enjoy making this fun snake themed craft project.
